Question of the Day: What Blogs Do You Read?

by Mandi on June 17, 2010

Reading Blogs & the Newspaper

source: dsevilla

Although a lot of bloggers admit that they rarely have time to read other blogs because of the time running their own blogs takes, one of the things I love about maintaining my Tumblr account and Weekend Reading posts is that it forces me to make the time to read other people’s posts. I’ll be honest, with more than 150 blogs in my feed reader (divided by category for easy browsing), that means that I start by skimming titles, and I actually only read a fraction of the posts. But the ones I read and bookmark usually leave me inspired and challenged, which is why I share them!

I’m working on cleaning up my reader — eliminating feeds that haven’t updated recently or only offer excerpts until you click through to their sites (sorry, I really don’t have time for that, no matter how much I love the blogger or the message) and adding new blogs to the mix — and I’d love to hear from you…

What are your favorite blogs?

Organizing, finance and time management blogs…

Family and marriage blogs…

Green blogs…

Decorating and craft blogs…

Success, blogging and business blogs…

What is your blog?

Looking forward to adding some of your favorites to my reader!

Mandi Ehman at Organizing Your Way

I completely stopped reading blogs for a while – I was feeling overwhelmed, guilty, and stressed trying to keep up with all the wonderful ladies whose blogs I was reading. I took a couple months off, then completely cleaned out my reader and began refilling it with blogs that offered me some sort of guilt-free encouragement, inexpensive and easy ideas for parenting and homemaking, and (obviously) organization.

Hey Mandi…this is a dangerous thing you are getting us to do. You do realize your reader will now BURST at the seams!! Or perhaps you are organized enough to drop an old one, when you pick up a new one (who are we kidding..we probably hoard way too many blogs!)

I like your list of categories. I also like photography blogs, and eye candy blogs (my fav eye candy at the moment is beautiful stationery! mmmmmm)

There are so many blogs I love!

The latest blog I’ve added to my list is 74 Lime Lane: http://74limelane.com.au/. Kellie is so good at finding gems from all around the internet and sharing them with her readers.

And my all time favourite (because she is so good at telling it like it is, and inspiring us about motherhood) is Sarah at Clover Lane
    http://memoriesoncloverlane.blogspot.com/

My blog is called Juggling Motherhood. Sounds like you would know all about the many balls we juggle as a mother, and how it can be really chaotic at times, and really fun as well! http://jugglingmotherhood.com/

Every week I share “5 Great Finds”. I am like you, and love reading other people’s blogs. If I come across something interesting, inspiring, exciting, lovely (you get the picture) I share it with my readers.

I also encourage mothers to take some time out for themselves (guilt free, selfish time). I share what I do on my “discovery dates”.

You will also find fun kids activities, as well as some lessons I have learned about motherhood on my blog as well ;)

I have way too many in my reader and I need to weed it out. I follow blogs related to personal finance, frugality, food, and organization. I have recently discovered some design and simplicity blogs that inspire. I get overwhelmed too, like Erika, and maybe I should take a break as well.

I am also trying to decide what direction I want to take with my own site. It has become very different than what I first envisioned, but not in a bad way.

I am a blogless reader but I am addicted to reading blogs! LOL!

I began reading pf blogs in 2007 and they still dominate my reader but I tend to skim through them and only read the ones that really personalize things. I have 3 year old twin girls and my reader is slowly being taken over by organizational/inspirational blogs to get me through the week.

My favorite of the pf blogs is definitely Beks from bloggingawaydebt.com (I have no idea how to make a link). I love her perspective and sense of humor.

I also love Sarah at http://memoriesoncloverlane.blogspot.com as mentioned above (I cut and pasted the link above – not sure if it will work)

And another must-read for me is Emily from remodelingthislife.com — her perspective and inspiration is just what I need most of the time. She has showed me how to enjoy my girls and just let them be kids sometimes. Plus her photography is amazing!

I mostly read decorating blogs or ones on homeschool. I limit myself to about 30. Decorating blogs are easy to keep up with because they are mostly projects. I rearely have time to work on my own blog let alone keep up with all the others. Lately my blog is focusing on my recipies for once a mohth cooking. Other than that it’s just our life and my decorating projects if I have time to work on them. :)

I love any blogs that have to do with family, faith and parenting, finance and organizing.

I like the simple living group of blogs, steady mom, we are that family, small notebook,(in)courage, family balance sheet, unclutter, wise bread, the MOB society and many more.

I love to read other blogs and learn things I can use in my life and learn about other peoples lives. I also like to see other bloggers styles. I sometimes realize I do get too many and don’t read them all, or that it is time consuming to do so, but for the most part I enjoy it greatly.

Oh my goodness. My Google Reader has 1000+ unread entries in it right now and it is TOTALLY STRESSING ME OUT. So I’m trying to put my fingers in my ears and sing “LA LA LA” while skimming the other comments. :)

I mostly read parenting/family life blogs. Long-time favorites are Lifenut (http://www.lifenut.com/blog/) and Adventures in Babywearing (http://www.adventuresinbabywearing.com/). Also Small Notebook and Simple Mom are long-time reads.

There are just so, so, SO many great writers and photographers out there. It gets overwhelming!

    Hi Mandi!
I love your weekend reads posts – it takes the work out of having a reader for me :)

I read some of the above mentioned, and Soule Mama, Pioneer Woman, and that’s about it. There are so many great blogs out there that it’s overwhelming at times.

I blog at http://cleanmama.blogspot.com/ and try to provide helpful and fun information for other moms.

I go back to blogs that have take-away information that I feel is useful – cooking, crafting, parenting, organizing…. which is why I subscribe to your great blog :)

It’s a great question and one I am planning to ask my readers as well!

I actually like to go to everyone’s sites ~ it’s my relaxation time in the afternoon. I have my reader on my google Ipage ~ so there’s three columns, work stuff, fun stuff, and kid/family/cooking/organizing stuff.

Some of my favorites are http://www.simplemom.net (and all the simple blogs). I’ve really been enjoying the Happiness Project blog (since I finished the book) http://www.happiness-project.com/

Productive Flourishing is one of my favorites as well: http://productiveflourishing.com

One of my favorite “business” blogs is http://www.ittybiz.com ~ she’s not for everyone but I love her outlook.

That’s about it I guess ~ oh I finally got my first podcast done too! woo hoo!

It never occurred to me to organise the blogs I read- LOL… how is that done in Google Reader? Ya, I have numerous blogs in my reader but recently I have this ‘rule’- I only add new subscriptions when I have deleted those lesser read ones. Before I share some of the links, I love the comments here cos now I get to know more blogs! ;D

Not fair to say that only these are my faves, as I enjoy reading all my subscriptions, but listing them all would take up too much space here ;p

A month or so ago I halved my reader and it was the best thing that I could have done. I used to fill so overwhelmed when it built up. I like this one http://theparentingpassageway.com/ because it constantly makes me reflect on how I am parenting / interacting with my kids. This one is a fabulous resource for all things literacy with kids http://trevorcairney.blogspot.com/ and this one http://storageandglee.blogspot.com/ because they present such an amazing array of cool things!

I love reading and discovering other blogs. I have so many in my reader too but I don’t mind, I am often reading them on my phone at 3am in the morning while feeding my son! Not sure what I’ll do when he starts sleeping through! Many of my favs are listed above. I will mention this one though: http://www.beyondthebaby.com.au/superorganisermum/ if only my home could look like that!

I’m going through the same transition right now (streamlining my feeds). I love reading blogs so much it has pretty much taken up most of my magazine reading time and I’m OK with that. To make sure I get to read all my favorites I built a few folders in my Google Reader – one for friends, one for quick reads, one for favorites and one for folks I’d like to start connecting with and getting to know more. I still have a ton I havent placed in folders but its really helping me manage the 100s of blogs I subscribe to. I’m deleting a few and adding some new. Yours is one of my new ones :)

A few of my never fail faves

I follow lots of blogs, but I have been trying to weed out some as well. Because of limited time to keep up, like you, I have made it a rule that I just can’t subscribe to any blog with a partial feed. I’ve been so disappointed when some fabulous blogs have partial feeds, but I just don’t like to be forced to click through to read them. I like to go because I want to comment (like this one, apparently). ;)

I have to agree with you about click through to read blogs – they are so annoying!

I have lots and divide them in my reader into “EveryDay” ( ones I really like to keep up with), Design, Eco Living. They really do need reorganising.

I am starting to look at what I do have and think ‘would I really miss this if it wasn’t there?’ and if I wouldn’t – its gone. I have a real problem with the thought of missing out on information and ideas though so it can be hard.

Just now I’m trying to track down a link in one of my blogs ( I think it could have been one of your blogs) to another blog where it spoke about not having to do everything all the time – that housekeeping has its seasons and to take joy in the everyday things of caring for our families. I think it was a ‘homestead’ type of blog??? Can you point me in the right direction?
