Question of the Day: What Magazines Do You Read?

QOTD: What Magazines Do You Read?

source: Monica's Dad

Although I’ve given up most of my paper books in favor of my Kindle, there’s something about magazines that I’m just not ready to let go of.  I love to flip through magazines, make notes and tear out pages to add to my tickler file for later reference.  It’s a different kind of browsing than I do on the internet, and I’m not ready to abandon it completely just yet.

Right now my favorites by far are Shop Smart, Real Simple and Family Fun. I’m always watching for a subscription deal on them, but I’m willing to pay for them if I can’t find a steal!

Today I want to know…

What magazines do you read?

Would you pay full price for your favorite magazine?

Do you pick your magazines up while you are shopping or are they delivered to your home?

Do you prefer paper books or have you gone completely electronic for your reading materials?

Do you own a Kindle or other type of of electronic reading device, or do you browse the internet for your electronic reading?

Looking forward to checking out your favorites!

LOL, Kelly — I can almost picture your home just from that list. I bet it’s beautiful! (And okay, I cheated a little because I have seen a little bit in pictures and videos, but still!)

I love Good Housekeeping and Woman’s Day. I don’t have a subscription anymore but when we go at the store, those two I look at first then buy if I like what’s in them.

I used to be a real magazine addict. Now I only subscribe to Bon Apetite and Martha Stewart Living. I go to the bookstore, buy a coffee and read all the magazines that I want. Occasionally I buy one that really fascinates me.

I’m a magazine-a-holic but only from great subscription deals and using frequent flier miles for subscriptions! I get; The Economist, Inc., Health, Fitness, Food Network, La Cuisina Italiana, Oprah, Lucky, National Geographic and Harpers.

Books – I have a Sony Reader and enjoy books being digital, however sometimes paper books are alright too.

I love magazines! I currently read Real Simple, Good House Keeping, Kiwi, Parents, Martha Stewart Living, Everyday Food, Smithsonian & National Geographic. I get most of my magazines for free or for gifts. The free ones come from answering surveys on websites like http:www.e-rewards.com

i have been a 15 year subscriber to canadian house and home (hello from winnipeg, manitoba canada!) and i also enjoy real simple, style at home and oprah. if i were stranded on a deserted island though, it would have to be house and home – a beautiful and practical canadian magazine featuring canadian homes or the homes of canadians abroad.

That magazine sounds lovely, Teresa — I love peeking inside other people’s homes, and a whole magazine of just that? Niiiice!

I love Real Simple, Oprah, and other house magazines, but I don’t buy too many. I just like to read them when I have the opportunity. I will buy Oprah’s occasionally.
Most of my other reading I do online. So many blogs, so little time!

I.love.magazines! So much so that I suscribe at the USA and they come all the way to Greece! I happen to think that american deco magazines are the best out there.
Currently come home House Beautiful, Country Living and Veranda. Sometimes I also buy the spanish “El mueble” but it’s a bit expensive.
Fashion wise my favorite is the greek In Style and sometimes Marie Claire
Last year I also really enjoyed Oprah’s magazine so I’m waiting for a special offer.
Whenever I travel to Europe, which is often enough, maybe twice or 3 times a year, I always return home with bundles of magazines.
The british ones are another favorite with the exception of the british House Beautiful that is horrible!

We have subscriptions to Real Simple, Everyday Food, Vegetarian Times, National Geographic, and This Old House. I occasionally buy these if the covers look good – Martha Stewart Living, Better Homes & Gardens (thinking of subscribing), Entertainment Weekly, and Family Fun. Love the glossies :)

Everyday Food sounds like my kind of magazine; I added it to my wishlist a few weeks ago, actually!

Bargainsbyjc.auctivacommerce.com is the absolute cheapest place to get magazines. i don’t know how I orignally found Jenifer’s mag site, but I have been using it for years and there are no hidden fees and the mags arrive every single time, no prblems. They are practically free! I can’t say enough about it/her. She can also be found on ebay, but they only allow her to list mag subscriptions as magazine gift certificates because of the time it takes for a magazine subscription to be delivered from the clearing house. Enjoy the tip!!!

The only magazine that comes into this house at the full price is The Limbaugh Letter.

I currently get All You & Good Housekeeping,…both by subscription, both at a significant savings over cover price. I’m sorely disappointed that All You is not all that people have raved about. If you get it by subscription, you don’t get all the great coupons. For this reason, it’s merely ‘okay’ in my book, but not worth re-upping. — Good Housekeeping – eh…I practically got it free, but I’m not going to bother with it again.

I also get this Garden magazine with these outrageous gardens & lavish homes. I can’t even afford to look at the ads in the magazine. Somehow I got it free, but it’s worthless to me anyway.

I’m still a paper book girl. I have the free kindle for my pc, but I just can’t get into electronic pages to a great length. My husband had his Bible on his PDA as far back as 2002, but it’s annoying to me. I like flipping pages rather than trying to get a scroll to behave.

NONE! lol. I don’t read magazines unless I’m at the salon and then I may pick up a People or some other skanky rag like that. Although I do enjoy perusing Real Simple when I get the chance.

I’ve been realding a few new ones that I never would have picked up before because I got a free month at maghound.com. I still love Real Simple, and I’ve read them for the past 4 years. I like All you, mainly for the coupons, and better homes and gardens. I dont’ like so many more…it was pretty easy to par down my selection.

I’ve reviewed some over them over at my blog. http://www.funkepunkemonke.com

Kat – you are SO right on with this. I discovered this myself a few years ago – I MUST have 8 hours of sleep to be a good mom. That means that the dishes and laundry don’t always get done on time, and I’m forever wishing I had more “me” time, but I’ll have all the ME time I need when the kids are in college. You can’t miss this precious time.

    • http://www.inspiredtoaction.com Kat @ InspiredToAction

What a wise and sobering perspective. The days are long but the years are short!

  • http://twitter.com/HappyLHomemaker Happy Lil Homemaker

This is such a great point, not just for sleep but other things that might take your attention or patience.

  • Chksngr

While I agree completely, its easier said than done…i follow my children to bed only by however long it takes me to brush my teeth, take out my contacts and wash my face….but one or the other wakes me nearly every night (disruption!) and my husband snores (can’t get back to sleep). I get up at 5:30 in order to exercise and read my Bible – also important for a sane mommy – before I go to work each day. Rest is like my nirvana….

    • http://www.inspiredtoaction.com Kat @ InspiredToAction

It is definitely a challenge and there are seasons when sleep comes more easily. I hope that season comes for you soon!

  • http://www.anothernewseason.com Donna S

I needed this – I’ve been trying to go to bed earlier, it’s a consistent struggle – I always think that late at night is the perfect time to have mommy time or do client work but it turns me in the the big bad mommy in the morning. It’s not a good trade off.
    Thank you!

  • http://impressyourkids.com ohamanda {impress your kids}

SO TRUE. When I plan (yes, PLAN) to go to bed by 10:15 I am SUCH a better mom the next day. But when my kids drag me out of bed? Be prepared for a rough day.

    Wonderful post as always, Kat!

  • http://overcomingbusy.com/ OvercomingBusy

Um…since I am staying up late reading this, I guess I should go to bed now! You are right. I am so much better….everyone is so much better when mama is well rested!

  • Alleysnoop

Wow. That was an eye opener for me-and something I sure needed to hear!! Thanks so much for getting straight to the heart. :)

  • Stephanie

So true! People always laugh at me because I’m 30 and go to bed at 9pm every night, even on weekends. By getting enough sleep I am able to wake up early in the morning without an alarm and well rested. I get some alone time in the morning and because I’m full of energy, I am able to get all my housework done, workout, cook, and play with our 3 kids. But of course, I do give up TV and internet time so that I can achieve this! This is a great post and I like the humor in it.

  • Lauren

Oh my gosh its like you have been in my house this week. I was seriously on the phone talking to my husband about how little sleep I got last night when I started reading this article and I told him about it and even he is laughing.

I’m struggling so hard to be a good mother right now because of my lack of sleep. I have been struggling with insomnia for 2 years now and its sucking the life out of me.

    I really enjoy:

    Real Simple
    Family Fun
    Knit Simple
    Creative Knitting
    Clean Eating
    Cooking Light
    Spirituality and Health

…but I don’t like paying full price. I just ended my Real Simple Subscription because it was too much. I’ll have to find some discounts. I enjoy reading whether it’s a mag, book, or on an electronic device. No, I don’t have a Kindle but I would LOVE one.

I think this is a good point, Josanne — I think the reason a lot of us stay up latter than we should is because it’s quiet and we have time to unwind. Getting the kids to bed earlier (which is SO much easier when it gets darker earlier, LOL) is a good way to still have that time in the evening and get to bed earlier!
