Quick Tip: Easy DIY Fruit Fly Trap

DIY fruit fly trap

DIY fruit fly trap

I don’t know about  you, but warm days and lots of fresh fruit and veggies on the counter inevitably lead to an abundance of fruit flies in our home. Since the little buggers multiply at an alarming rate, the situation can quickly get out of control, but I hate the idea of putting all of my produce in the fridge just to keep them away.

Thankfully, this DIY fruit fly trap works perfectly. Use it to catch the flies that are already taking over your kitchen and then keep it out to capture any new ones before they reproduce!

All you need is:

  • a tall glass or jar
  • a piece of paper
  • tape
  • scissors
  • apple cider vinegar
  • fruit juice

Pour 1/2″ of apple cider vinegar into your glass or jar and add a splash of fruit juice.

Next, take your piece of paper and roll it into a cone. It needs to be short and wide so that it fits tightly at the top but doesn’t dip into the mixture at the bottom. Once you get the right shape, tape your cone closed and trim the excess around the top.

Slip your cone into your jar, making sure it creates a loose seal around the top.

Set the jar near your fresh fruit or wherever you  find fruit flies and watch.

If you already have a ton of fruit flies, you will be amazed — and probably a little disgusted — by how many you catch in your jar. Many of them will die in the vinegar, but you can also take it outside and release them if you want.

We change our mixture every 3 or 4 days because it seems to be more effective when it’s fresh.

Do you get lots of fruit flies during the summer months? How do you deal with them?

I’ve been making fruit fly traps like this for a while now and they are by far the best solution. Cheap, eco-friendly and easy to make and work better than any of the store bought items. Highly recommend.

I’ve heard you can do the same thing but just poke a tiny hole in a piece of plastic wrap that’s been stretched over the glass.

We’ve had them show up this year in/around the composting container, so I really need to give one of these methods a shot.

    Thanks for reminding me!

Oh, good to know — I may try that as well!

Thank you! I really needed this tip right now. Good to know there’s an easy, inexpensive, and green option to take care of those little buggers.

They’re so annoying, aren’t they? And they multiply so fast!

This technique also works well with a paper funnel stuffed into the top of a beer bottle that has a tiny bit of beer left in the bottom.  Works even better if that beer was a corona and you have a lime wedge or 2 stuck in the bottom.  :)

Oh thank god! We’ve been dealing with so many fruit flies in our apartment lately and the methods we’ve been trying have not been working. And the method that HAS worked, we don’t want to use since it requires us wasting perfectly good wine.

    Thanks!

This also works with a slice of banana (or just pay attention to whatever fruit they are already congregating at, and use that).

      Good tip — thank you!

Great idea, I am going to try this today. Last night I set out a bowl of sugar water but I should have read this first because it did nothing. Just wondering, how does the vinegar kill the fruit flies if the cone is sealed?

    • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

I think the vinegar + fruit just attracts them and the cone traps them inside the glass until they die (or until you release them, which we do sometimes if there are a ton in the glass!).

I’m looking forward to trying this.  I do a lot of canning and freezing and I HATE fruit flys!  Thanks!

When I have some cheap red wine left over after dinner I leave the glass out on the counter – open without plastic or a funnel – and the fruit flies drop right in. Sometimes I leave it for a few days (ewww!).  Works like a charm.

That’s good to know! I think maybe the funnel works faster because it traps them once they go in rather than waiting for them to drink/drown? Not sure, though!

I use much the same method, by putting plastic wrap over the top of a paper cup or bottle. Poke holes in the top of the plastic wrap with a toothpick, and I put a piece of fruit (banana, apple, etc) in the cup. It doesn’t kill them, but it catches a lot of them. Then I release them outside.
My daughter used to work at a coffee shop and they had problems in the kitchen, she showed them this, and they were amazed. I think they still use it today.

      Great tip, Dawn — thanks!
