Today’s Day 2 of the Simplify for Fall Challenge, and we’re tackling the kitchen and meal plan!
Here’s my plan:
My kitchen is not especially cluttered. I tend to declutter it often and somewhat ruthlessly, so the drawers and cabinets aren’t overflowing or anything.
That said, I have realized that having “extras” of certain things — measuring spoons, for example — just means that I’m less likely to wash them as I use them, which results in more dirty dishes at the end. So one of my goals is to get rid of the remaining plastic measuring spoons we have and just stick to the set my mom got me from King Arthur. Similarly, I’m going to declutter my wooden utensils and some nesting bowls that I don’t use.
My baking drawer is a bit of a mess — mostly because I’ve started using some new things that haven’t yet been transferred to jars — and I bought big glass jars to use for flour because the spaghetti sauce jars I was using just aren’t big enough!
I already moved a lot of my stockpile out of the pantry yesterday, so now what’s left just needs to be cleaned up and organized.
The fridge and freezer definitely need to be cleaned; it’s been a while since I’ve pulled out shelves and washed them, etc.
And I’m hoping to reorganize some of our cabinets to create better zones and make the things we use the most — like glass jars — more accessible.
As far as the meal plan, I’d like to get back to planning and shopping for a full month at a time rather than on a weekly basis.
My plan for today is to create a meal plan for September on Plan to Eat (next week we’ll eat out of the pantry). Then I’ll be able to copy the meal plan from month-to-month and just add in any new recipes we want to try, which should really simplify our planning in general, and hopefully save us money in the process!
I’ll be posting updates here throughout the day. You can also see them in real time by following me on Instagram (@mandiehman) or Pinterest (@lifeyourway). If you’re sharing pictures on either of those, be sure to tag your updates with #simplifyingforfall so we can all see them. Or if you’re blogging your progress, leave the link to your post in the comments!
The girls and I started by cleaning all the glue residue off the glass jars we use as drinking glasses, something that’s been bugging me for ages!
Then I cleaned up the small appliance cabinet, moving some of the accessories I don’t use to the top shelf, pulling a couple things out for the giveaway pile and wiping down all of the shelves.
I used velcro zip ties to secure the cords, and I really, really like these, which I got on Amazon ($6.98 for 100).
I then worked on several cabinets and drawers, wiping them down, decluttering a few things and organizing them in general. This drawer is my favorite, with all of our Pyrex and mason jars, which have replaced all of our plastic in the kitchen.
I’m still working on various drawers, and I keep getting distracted by small projects — like refilling jars or seasoning my cast iron skillets! My goal is still to finish all of the cabinets, but I’m not sure the fridge and freezer are going to get done tonight, which means I will have two unfinished projects to make up for tomorrow.
What’s your biggest kitchen or meal planning challenge?
